Cooperation between Iceland and Sierra Leone is centred on development partnership. Iceland’s engagement began in 2018 through its collaboration with the West African Regional Fisheries Project (WARFP), funded by the World Bank. The project’s overall objective is to support the sustainable use of marine resources and strengthen livelihoods in fishing communities.
Iceland’s approach has focused on improving living conditions in coastal communities through a holistic framework. This has included support for water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) initiatives, as well as improved handling and processing of fish catches, implemented in partnership with UNICEF and the Sierra Leonean Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.
Since 2020, Iceland has also supported the work of UNFPA in Sierra Leone, contributing to improved quality of life for girls and women living with obstetric fistula. In addition, Iceland is currently supporting Home‑Grown School Meals in cooperation with the World Food Programme (WFP).
Further programmes are under preparation.
