HRC61 - Iceland statement - Item 7: General Debate
Human Rights Council – 61st Session
Item 7: General Debate
Statement delivered by Iceland
24 March 2026
Mr. President,
Iceland recognised Palestine in 2011 and remains steadfast in its commitment to the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and a path toward freedom, justice and lasting peace.
Civilians in Gaza continue to endure extreme hardship, exacerbated by the destruction of critical infrastructure and essential services. Several hundred civilians, including many children, have been killed since the ceasefire came into effect. All parties must respect the ceasefire and continue to implement Security Council Resolution 2803.
Iceland continues to call for safe, sustained and unhindered humanitarian access to reach those in urgent need.
We reiterate our strong opposition to Israel’s continued illegal settlement policies and activities in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Rising settler violence, fuelled by impunity, and decisions and measures aimed at consolidating control over Palestinian land risk further instability and must stop.
These decisions must be immediately reversed, not only to uphold international law but to preserve any chance for a just and sustainable peace based on the two-state solution and the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
Protecting the work of UN agencies, including UNRWA, and ensuring access for journalists and investigators is essential.
Human dignity and fundamental rights need to be upheld in Palestine. This Council must ensure accountability and respect for international obligations.
I thank you.
